The Route

 

The walk will go from east to west with two legs on Saturday 21st August
and two legs on Sunday 22nd August
Saturday 21st: Leg 1   Lewes to Pyecombe 9 miles
Saturday 21st: Leg 2   Pyecombe to St Botolphs 8 miles
Sunday 22nd: Leg 3   St Botolphs to Amberley 14 miles
Sunday 22nd: Leg 4   Amberley to Goodwood 11 miles

The following alternative routes are available for those who would prefer a shorter walk.
Saturday 21st: Leg 2A   Devil’s Dyke to St Botolph’s 5 miles *
Sunday 22nd: Leg 4A   Eartham Wood to Goodwood 5 miles

* Leg 2A Devils Dyke to St Botolphs has been designated as a "Fun Leg ".

Walkers will have the choice of which legs to walk but must walk them on the day specified and in the direction east to west.

Start/Finish Locations:

Lewes (Start of Leg 1)
The start for the 2010 Walk is Lewes Town Hall, High Street, Lewes BN7 2QS  Click here for a map.

Rail Access: to Lewes Station – only a short walk from the Town Hall. Click here to see the Southern Railway timetables.

Road access available from all directions. There is no organised parking available at the start. Click here to see a map showing available parking places in Lewes.

The Start will be open from 8.00am until 10.30am

The base will be operated by the Rotary Club of Lewes.

Walkers who fancy a bite of breakfast to sustain them on their walk might like to visit Art.is.an at 197 High Street, a few yards down from the registration office in the town hall. The café opens at 0800 and can serve a wide range of breakfast options from boiled eggs with soldiers to scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or crispy bacon. Telephone the café on 01273 479713 if you would like an earlier start or if you want to reserve a table

Pyecombe (Finish of Leg 1, Start of Leg 2)
The finish of Leg 1 and start of Leg 2 will be located in a field at School Lane, Pyecombe, Map Reference TQ293127
Click Here for a map. The start for leg 2 will be open from 11 am until 1pm and reception for walkers from Lewes will be open from 11.00am until 4.00pm.

Countryliner Route 40 buses are available between Pyecombe and Brighton. Click here to see the Countryliner bus timetable. The bus does stop in Pyecombe although it is not listed in the timetable. Pyecombe is about midway between Hassocks and Patcham. Hike4Hospices buses will be available to take walkers back to Lewes, click here to see the timetable.

The base will be operated by the Rotary Club of Brighton.

Devils Dyke (Start of Leg 2A) This leg has been designated as a Fun Leg
The start is on the South Downs Way where it crosses Dyke Road in a field on the west side of the road. Map reference TQ258106. Click here for a map.

Brighton and Hove bus route 77 from Brighton Pier via Brighton Station passes the start. Details can be found on the Brighton and Hove Buses website and the Southern Railway timetable can be viewed by clicking here. Space will be available for walkers to be set down safely off the road away from cars.

Walkers wishing to park cars should use the permanent, informal car parks on the Devil’s Dyke Road. The start will be open from 11.30am until 1.30pm. The Hike4Hospices bus service will be available to return walkers from St Botolphs to Devils Dyke to collect their cars.

St Botolphs Church (Finish of Legs 2 and 2A and Start of Leg 3)
The finish of Leg 2 and Leg 2A and the start of Leg 3 will be located at St Botolph’s Church, Annington Road, Botolphs, near Steyning, West Sussex BN44 3WA. Map Reference TQ193092. This is on the west side of the River Adur just over 2 miles north of the A27 and 1.5 miles south of Steyning. Walkers arriving here will cross the river on the South Downs Way and turn left on reaching the road. The church is on the east side of this road. Those arriving by road will either take the Annington Road out of Steyning or take the Coombes Road turning off the A27 (opposite Shoreham Airport turning and next to the Sussex Pad Hotel).   Click here for a map. Please be aware the Shoreham Airshow is being held on the same weekend as Hike 4 Hospices and there could be congestion on the A27. It may be wise, if possible, to approach St Botolphs from the north via Steyning.

On Saturday 21st August reception for walkers arriving from Pyecombe or Devils Dyke will open at 1pm and will close at 5 pm. On Sunday 23rd August the start for Leg 3 will be open from 8 am until 10.30 am

Brighton and Hove Buses Route 2A passes through Beeding and goes via the A283 to Shoreham by Sea railway station. Details can be found on the Brighton and Hove Buses website and the Southern Railway timetable can be viewed by clicking here.

The Hike4Hospices buses will be available to take walkers back to Devils Dyke, Pyecombe or Lewes, click here to see the timetable.

Walkers starting at St Botolphs Church (Sunday morning, 22nd) should try and get a lift or use public transport as there is very little parking space available.

Amberley (Finish of Leg 3, Start of Leg 4)
The finish of Leg 3 and start of Leg 4 will be located in the car park of Amberley Working Museum, Station Road, Amberley, Arundel, West Sussex BN18 9LT which is adjacent to Amberley Station. Click here for a map.

The start will be open from 11am until 1.00pm and reception for walkers from St Botolphs will close at 6 pm.

Walkers arriving at Amberley can return by train (preferred) or catch a bus to St Botolphs Church or arrange to be picked up. Click here for Southern Railway timetables or click here for the Hike4Hospices bus timetable.

Eartham Wood (Start of Leg 4A)
The start of Leg 4A will be in the Forestry Commission car park which is about one kilometre north of Eartham Village (map reference SU938108). It is near the Petworth to Chichester road (A285) for those coming from the north. For those travelling from other directions, turning north from the A27 near Fontwell on to one of a number of roads to Eartham village should be considered. Click here for a map.

Hike4hospices buses will be available. Please click here to see the timetable. You may find it more convenient to park at Goodwood and then use the Hike4hospices bus service to take you to the start at Eartham and then walk back to Goodwood.

Walkers will be able to start for Goodwood from here between 1pm and 3-15 pm.

The base will be operated by the Rotary Club of Midhurst and Petworth.

Goodwood (Finish of Legs 4 and 4A)
The walk will finish in the Lennox Enclosure of Goodwood Racecourse SU 886111  Click here for a map. The Post Code for those using Sat Navs is PO18 0PS

Reception for walkers arriving from Amberley and Eartham Wood will be open from 12 noon until 6 pm

Walkers arriving at Goodwood will be able to catch a bus back to their start point, click here for the timetable, or arrange to be picked up.

As this is the end of the walk, there will be food and drink available as well as end of walk celebrations.
